How we rank browsers
Every ranking on this site — the quiz, the guides, the head-to-heads — comes from one table of scores and one formula. Here are both.
The scores
Each of the 57 browsers is rated 0 to 3 on 22 criteria: 0 means absent or poor, 3 means as good as it gets. Open source is read straight from the license (fully open 3, partially open 2, proprietary 0); the other 21 are rated by hand and revisited as browsers change. Every browser's full scorecard is on its own page.

The formula
Score = the sum of weight × score over all criteria. Each quiz answer adds weight to the criteria it cares about. Two small weights are always on — Site compatibility ×0.75 and Low maintenance ×0.5 — so a browser that breaks sites or needs constant tending can't win by accident. Ties go to the browser with better site compatibility, then alphabetical order.
Hard filters drop browsers entirely: your devices (a browser must run on every one you pick) and “Does open source matter to you?” → “Hard requirement”. One question adds flat bonus points for fitting an ecosystem you already live in:
- Google: Google Chrome +4, Chromium +2
- Apple: Safari +4, Orion +3, SigmaOS +1
- Microsoft: Microsoft Edge +4
- My Linux desktop: GNOME Web (Epiphany) +4, Falkon +3, Konqueror +1
The guides
Each guide is the quiz with its answers fixed: a published set of weights (always-on weights included), plus a device filter or a minimum score where the topic calls for one. Lists stop at ten, or earlier when fewer browsers meet the minimum. Browsers with identical scores are shown as tied.

A comparison's short answer names the criteria where the two browsers' scores differ most, up to three each way.
Independence
No browser maker pays for placement, there are no affiliate links, and the site sets no cookies and runs no trackers or analytics. Logos belong to their projects and are used only to identify them. Data last reviewed September 2026.
